The terminology Network Security and Information or Internet Security are often used interchangeably. Network Security
is often defined as providing protection of computers or servers of an organization by keeping out intruders (hackers).
Information Security, however, explicitly focuses on protecting data resources from malware attack or simple mistakes by
people within an organization by use of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) techniques. One of these techniques is to
compartmentalize large networks with internal boundaries. Employees have to cross these boundaries and be authenticated
when attempting to access protected information. This gives a higher level of security to all areas within that network
and provides a company a significantly higher level of protection against data theft.
There are also many stages to security through authentication on a network. The first level of security being something as
simple as a user name and password. The second level of protection is that of a security token, dongle, retinal scan,
fingerprint scan, or other device. Once authenticated, the network firewall enforces policies and determines what level
of access that particular user is allowed.
Internet security involves the protection of a computer's internet account and files from intrusion of an unknown user.
Basic security measures involve protection by well selected passwords, change of file permissions and back up of computer's
data. Security concerns are in some ways peripheral to normal business working, but serve to highlight just how important it
is that business users feel confident when using IT systems. Security will probably always be high on the IT agenda simply
because cyber criminals know that a successful attack is very profitable. This means they will always strive to find new
ways to circumvent IT security, and users will consequently need to be continually vigilant. Whenever decisions need to be
made about how to enhance a system, security will need to be held uppermost among its requirements.
