Is Your Website Profitable??

Welcome to the first issue of the WebTrenz Newsletter. It is our intention to help educate you a little more about how Internet web development and marketing work. It is not our intention to overwhelm you with terms or search algorithms that make most people's eyes glaze over. We will do everything in our power to explain things in simple terms so that you can get an idea of what is involved with developing and managing your website. As we explain things in better terms for you, it might seem that some of the things that you pay companies to do for you in making your website profitable are simple and that you feel that you can do them yourself. Think twice before doing that. The Internet industry changes daily, as does the technology. It is our intention to educate you enough to help you make decisions in terms of what steps you want to take to make your website more profitable for you and your business.

Web Development In Our Current Economy

Everyone knows that the economy has hit everyone pretty hard. The foreclosure rate is at an all-time high, as is the unemployment rate. Interestingly enough, studies show that more and more people are turning to the Internet to find most of their products and services. People want to find the best "deal" for their hard earned money. So what does that mean for website owners? It means that you need to make sure that your Internet presence is the most professional it can be as well as competitive within your industry.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are two terms that will either make or break your website today. They will be the difference between 10 people coming to your site a day and 1000. On top of that, the way that you build your search ready pages for Google, Yahoo, MSN, and others will ultimately determine the quality of traffic that you can expect to visit your site. Therefore, ultimately once you have those two working properly, you will find a huge increase in quality traffic that are interested in your products or services. Let us show you how to get that working properly. We have more than 15 years experience in driving traffic to websites. The return on your investment associated with hiring a company to manage your SEO compared to attempting to do this on your own is staggering. Another way of looking at this is such... Everyone can cut their own hair, but would you really want to do this on your own or would you rather have a professional do it?

Drive Traffic To Your Website

Are You Driving Traffic To Your Website?

This seems like a simple enough question, but is it? Marketing in today's world revolves entirely around one of two means. You can continue to advertise in your local phone book or you can take advantage of the literally dozens of online advertising opportunities, many of which are either free or close enough to free that you really don't want to pass them up.

Free? No matter whether you are a small or large business, the opportunity to get your name out there free seems to always have a nice ring to it. Let's put it into perspective. Most normal search engines out there are free to submit your company name and website information to. Your site will always show up in the organic search listings. For more information on what the definition of "organic search" is, check out our definition section in this month's newsletter.

First and foremost, you need to determine how your website is currently showing up in the search engines. Most likely Google, Yahoo, and others have already indexed and listed your website. The question then becomes how did they index and list it? Is the listings on the search engine reflecting what you want your potential customers to see when they search for the products or services that you market? In most cases, this answer is generally "no". Why? Well, in most cases it comes down to how your website was developed and how much time was dedicated to planning out the optimization of your website. Optimization of your website is generally referred to as SEO or Search Engine Optimization in the web development industry. This is another term in our list of definitions in this month's newsletter. So did the person who developed your website optimize your website for better search engine indexing? The easiest way to answer this question is by simply going to Google and typing into the search box the following, "site:yourwebsite.com" obviously replacing "yourwebsite.com" with the domain name of your website. In most search engines, this will provide you a complete list of all pages from your website that are listed in that particular search engine. The best place to do this is generally Google or Yahoo since there are so many search engines out there that compile their listings based on what is indexed at Google or Yahoo.

Studies show that more than 78% of all search engine results contain information that is either outdated or simply incorrect. In developing websites for clients, we have found that in most cases that this is very true. In fact, our search engine management team spends a large amount of time cleaning up listings than we do creating new ones. This process can often be difficult. However, our staff has an excellent track record for cleaning up search engine listings for companies and we do it generally for less than half the price that others companies in our industry do.

Top 5 Search Engines By Volume

According to HitWise, the following is a list of the top five search engines by volume of searches for the four weeks ending 06/29/09. These statistics are based upon volumes of searches and not popularity.

  • Google - 74.19%
  • Yahoo - 16.13%
  • Ask - 3.37%
  • Bing - 3.23%
  • MSN - 1.05%

Based on volume, you can clearly see that Google dominates the market share in terms of their search functionality by itself. These statistics do not take into account other factors such as additional services offered by the search engines such as maps, photo sites, news, e-mail, shopping, and so on.

Microsoft's Bing Search Engine Takes Over?

With commercials for their new search engine on just about every channel on television, Microsoft has re-invented itself with a new search engine touting to be a "decision engine". It debuted on June 3rd and has already taken the search engine industry by storm. Most experts now agree that it has surpassed Yahoo as the second leading search engine and that it won't be long before it takes over Google as the most preferred search engine out in the marketplace today.

Microsoft is using techniques with this search engine that are not necessarily unique or new, but it is yet to be seen if people will ultimately like them long term. First and foremost is the 20 results per page instead of the common 10 result page that people are accustomed to in most search engines. Microsoft is also betting pretty heavily that people will also be clicking on the links that lead you to various groups on the related topics that you have ultimately selected as your search term. The concept of grouping results also is not new. Long known as clustering, you can see it in use at other search engines like Hakia, Clusty, and others. Microsoft claims that they are putting their own unique spin on it hoping to draw your attention to the non-organic search results and more so on the sponsored links. Personally, their pages look too busy and whether it will work or not is yet to be seen. Some experts are betting that the various sub-headings are distracting and will ultimately be overlooked. Keep in mind that Google also has it's own form of clustering in their "related search suggestions".

Advertising with Bing will be discussed further in our next issue of WebTrenz. There are many options when it comes to this new search engine and we believe that in the long run that Bing is here to stay and will rival many other search engines in terms of the best use for your Internet advertising dollar. We have been running tests with respect to how effective their marketing program is. Hopefully we will have more informative information for you relatively soon.

Microsoft has released white papers on SEO advice for Bing called "Bing: New Features Relevant to Webmasters". This is the second document in as many weeks, as they first put out what they called the " IIS Search Engine Optimization Toolkit" The PDF document in the "New Features" document does more to describe the user interface changes that launched with Bing, but does go into SEO a little. Overall, the look and feel of Bing is substantially different than most search engines because the organic results are much different in terms of how they show on the page. Microsoft says that over 300 factors go into determining the category results for Bing. In other words, you may search for "Stanley Cup Playoffs". The first five results will yield those results. Then six through eight may show "Stanley Cup Playoff Pictures" because that is what is commonly searched for and then nine through twelve may result in Stanley Cup Statistics" or similar results popular to that particular search.

Microsoft says that this new way of organizing results provides new long tail opportunities for site owners. They suggest determining what entities you most want your site to rank for and then optimizing for the long tail queries within those entities. For instance, if your site is about cars, you'll want to optimize for the car brands (Ford, Chevrolet, etc.) but also car-related categories such as dealers, used, and for sale. That will give you additional opportunities to rank on the first page of results and the ability to stay on top a little more consistently.
There are literally hundreds of other factors that go into this new way of looking at search results. We have been studying this search engine since early April of this year when we were sent links to the early versions of the search engine in Beta, which at that time was called Kumo. If you are interested in discussing optimization of your site for this search engine or the advertising opportunities that have resulted because of the new technology, let us know. We have worked with several site owners since Bing opened up in June.

Amazon Gets Into Pay-Per-Click Market

Amazon has announced that they have released their Product Ad Service, a pay-per-click advertising service that provides access to products on third-party websites. Advertisers upload their catalog, set their cost-per-click bids (and daily budget), and Amazon will then display ads to visitors when they shop for a product or related products. There are no monthly fees and no minimum spend. Our belief is to wait and see how this program unfolds a little before jumping into the mix and spending money with them. Yet, understand that Amazon like Google and Yahoo, attract a great deal of traffic. The bigger question however, is that the type of traffic that would be attracted to your particular target marketing?
